TALENT SHOW

We will be singing this song for the Talent Show on May 19th, along with Mrs. Flanegin's and Mrs. Malaponti's classes. Please practice at home with your child so he/she can be well-prepared at the Talent Show.

Measurement

This week we learned how to measure objects by:
*comparing objects to see which is longer or shorter
*using indirect measurement to compare objects (i.e. Using a ruler to measure to objects to see which is longer/shorter)
*measuring objects using standard and non-standard units (cubes, straws, paper clips, and inches.

One of our measurement adventures was to measure a friend using two different units. The students learned that the units needed to be touching so there were no gaps. They also discovered that the smaller the unit, the bigger the measurement was because it took more of them.

Weather Unit

We've been learning all about weather. Students experimented with the wind by blowing bubbles and flying kites. We discussed wind direction, what makes wind, and the impact wind has on our changing weather.

Students also had to work with a partner to design, build, and test a parachute when learning about air pressure. Here is the designing process.

In this video, they are testing their parachutes to see if they fly, how fast they fly, and if the "food" they're bringing to firefighters stays in the basket."

We also learned about temperature and how to read a thermometer. We discussed the weather patterns throughout each season, and students learned about the impact weather has on our daily lives.

Place Value Professionals

We have been working very hard on identifying the tens place and ones place of a two-digit number. We have also been working on comparing the value of numbers and ordering them from least to greatest and greatest to least. We did an activity this week where students had to work with a small group and stand in order (either greatest to least or vice versa). Then, they had to present to the class to make sure they were in the correct order. We did this a few different times so students had the opportunity to work with different people each time.

At the end, students had to order all of their numbers from least to greatest. They really enjoyed this activity!

Grandparents' Day

The students had a great afternoon showing their grandparents around our classroom!

Dr. Seuss Day!

For Dr. Seuss's birthday, we celebrated by reading a Dr. Seuss book with a partner. The students love the silly rhyming words!

Then, we read "Green Eggs and Ham." To the students' surprise, they were given green eggs and ham to taste. Some loved it...others hated it.

Lastly, students had to write about their opinion and support it with reasons! I think they would all agree, though, that they had a great time!
